Beware of the Latest IRS Scam

The Newton Police Department has recently sent out a notification that they have been receiving numerous phone calls regarding IRS scams targeting Newton residents. The scam is that the caller identifies themselves as the IRS from a fake IRS phone number. The caller demands money over the phone and threatens the victim with an arrest if they refuse to give money. Caller ID’s can be masked so that the number appears to be legitimate.
The IRS does not make phone calls. Their method of communication is by mail.

The biggest deterrent with this scam is to hang up the phone on the scammer/caller.
Please be cautious if anyone calls and demands money or asks for your personal identifying information. If you are a victim of this scam, notify the Newton Police Department.
