The Village Bank awards $40,000 in Scholarships to Newton, Wayland students
AUBURNDALE, MASSACHUSETTS, August 23, 2007 … Kenneth C. Brennan, president and CEO of The Village Bank, has announced the names of the recipients of college scholarships totaling $40,000 awarded recently by the Bank’s Auburndale Community Charitable Foundation.
Twelve college-bound Newton and Wayland students will share in the awards.
Jennifer L. Lavalle of Newton North High School and Kathryn Stack of Wayland High School are the recipients of two special scholarships totaling $10,000 each awarded by the Foundation this year. The scholarships will be honored upon successful completion of each of the students’ four academic years.
Students applying for the $10,000 scholarships must have demonstrated active involvement in community and/or charitable causes. The student or an immediate family member must also have been a customer of The Village Bank since at least January 1, 2006.
“The Village Bank has always had a strong commitment to the community it serves,” said Brennan. “This year’s $10,000 scholarships gave us the opportunity to recognize local students who share that commitment.
“We also value the solid relationships we enjoy with our customers, “ he added. “The new scholarships allowed us to ‘give back’ to customers as well as to the community.”
$2,000 Scholarships
The Auburndale Community Charitable Foundation also granted 10 one-time $2,000 scholarships. All Newton and Wayland graduating high school seniors were eligible to apply.
The $2,000 scholarship winners were: Meghan Arsenault, Newton Country Day School; Mary Gowins, Newton North High School; Rachael M. Boggia, Wayland High School; Elena Swartz, Newton North High School, and Anna Ziering, Boston University Academy.
Also, all from Newton South High School: Seth Mermelstein, Adrienne Lerner, Stephanie Newton, Elizabeth C. Pezza, and Alexander M. Jarowey.
All of the scholarship awards can be applied toward tuition, room and board or supplies at the college of the student’s choice.
Auburndale Community Charitable Foundation scholarships are funded in part by the Bank’s Annual Golf Classic. The scholarship program began a decade ago with the announcement of five $2,000 scholarships to be awarded to members of the 1998 graduating class.
The number of annual scholarships was gradually increased, and the Foundation’s total investment in education since the program began now totals $162,000.
